Does It Matter When You Brush?

Does It Matter When You Brush?

Morning or night? Before breakfast or after? Most people have a brushing routine, but few have thought about whether the timing actually matters. It does. More than you'd expect.

At night, your saliva production drops while you sleep. Saliva is your mouth's natural rinse cycle. It washes away bacteria and neutralizes the acids they produce. Without it, whatever is left on your teeth has 6 to 8 uninterrupted hours to cause damage 🥴.

That makes your bedtime brush the most important one of the day 🪥.

In the morning, the question is: before or after breakfast? Brushing before breakfast clears away the bacteria that multiplied overnight and coats your teeth with fluoride before you eat. Brushing right after breakfast, especially after acidic foods like coffee or orange juice, can actually push acid into softened enamel .

If you prefer brushing after eating, wait at least 30 minutes ⏱️.

The bottom line: never skip the night brush. And in the morning, before breakfast is the safer bet.
