Gum Disease and Your Brain: What New Research Shows

Gum Disease and Your Brain: What New Research Shows

Can what happens in your mouth affect your memory? According to a growing body of research, the answer is yes.

A 2024 meta-analysis from the University of Leeds reviewed 39 studies and found that people with periodontal (gum) disease have a 33% higher risk of cognitive decline and a 22% higher risk of dementia. The researchers believe chronic oral inflammation may trigger immune responses that, over time, affect brain health.

This is still an emerging area of research, and gum disease alone doesn't cause dementia. But the pattern is consistent across dozens of studies: chronic inflammation in the mouth appears to be connected to long-term cognitive health. And since periodontal disease is one of the most preventable inflammatory conditions, that connection matters.

Taking care of your gums today may be one of the smartest investments in your future. Brush, floss, and see your dentist regularly. These habits protect more than your smile.
