Not All Floss Works the Same

Not All Floss Works the Same

Most people think floss is floss. You grab whatever is on the shelf, use it (or don't), and move on. But the reality is that different types of floss are built for very different mouths. And using the wrong one can make the experience worse than not flossing at all.

Nylon floss is the most common and affordable, but it frays easily between tight teeth. Waxed floss slides better but can feel thick. PTFE floss is smooth and strong but varies hugely in quality between brands. Expanding floss puffs up once it's between your teeth, which is great for wider gaps and sensitive gums but can feel bulky if your teeth are close together.

Each type has a job. The trick is matching it to your mouth.

Think of it like toothbrushes. You wouldn't use hard bristles on sensitive gums. The same logic applies to floss. The material, the shape, and the texture all matter. Matching the right floss to your teeth is one of the simplest upgrades you can make to your routine.

Not sure where to start? Pay attention to your spacing and sensitivity. If floss shreds, go smoother. If it hurts, go gentler. When floss feels right, daily is automatic.
